Forza Mattia

Since the 1st of March 2007, Mattia Fiori, a 24 years old guy, is in a coma because of an antibiotic.
As many of us did in their daily lives, Mattia went to his doctor because of an infection, and he had been prescribed an antibiotic that he took already a few times before.
Since that day his life has stopped, because of an anaphylactic shock, because of an unexpected allergy he wasn't aware of.

Mattia was able to call for help when he felt the initial symptoms of suffocation,  but when the ambulance arrived the door was closed. Mattia was home alone and in a few minutes after the call he had an hearth attack, caused by the allergy to the antibiotic.

When the rescue team entered the house, helped by the fire brigade, Mattia's hearth had stopped already and even if they were able to reanimate him, his brain suffered of heavy damages due to the lack of oxygen.
Mattia, in that moment, fought for his life, which is now hanging by a thread, in a coma.

Mattia is a sporty guy, healthy, joyful, generous, smart, sweet and always smiling. He loves his family, his nephew Jacopo, soccer, his friends and his job, but above all he loves LIFE.

Now he is in a house for chronic patients, where he is assisted by his parents 24/7, but this place is completely inadequate for patients like Mattia: a "parking space" waiting for the end to come..

The patient is nursed but not stimulated, the physiotherapy is reduced to the minimum and any action fit to interact with the patient, is left to the relatives.

Our goal is to find a place which believes in Mattia, in his recovery and that helps us to keep stimulating him, a place that practises physiotherapy, ergo therapy and the swallowing therapy, thus giving him the possibility to remove the tracheotomy, a place that allows all steps necessary to his hoped awakening.

If we won't find this place, the objective is to take him home, as his family wants to take care of him 24/7 without EVER ABANDONING THE HOPE.

Mattia has been given a "social house" but the longer will be his presence in a rehabilitation centre, the higher will be the possibility for him to make some progress.

Furthermore, where Mattia is now, nobody teaches the family how to properly take care of him from several points of view. The family cannot look or participate when he is dressed and undressed, when he is turned in his bed or put on the wheelchair, when he is washed and generally nursed. During the short physiotherapy sessions, nobody can assist and try to learn the daily movements he has to do. The family always has to stay outside of a closed door.

It is not possible even to have an external physiotherapist who, paid by the family, could come to integrate what is done in this "house" . This because the doctors in charge (geriatricians) think that 30 minutes a day are already more than enough.

We know that Mattia can hear us and we believe in him. His family, friends, fellow citizens, some politicians, are making moves in order for Mattia to have the opportunity to recover, to come back to us, to live and to have the most appropriate care, to be treated with DIGNITY and to have the right to be nursed as the family asks.

Mattia is fighting and his friends that are fighting with him have founded a committee to raise funds, in order to help him maybe one day to come back home and pay privately the treatmentsand care that he deserves.
